FF meets DOA

Almost forgot here is some more info:

Hey folks how's it going?

I've got another movie here. I had this one in my mind awhile ago and I finally got the chance to get to it after all the hubbub surrounding my previous movie and what it did for my life.

I started this one about last July and gradually worked into it piece by piece. First thing I usually decide on when I make a movie is the "why is this cool?" And as far as this movie goes, the coolest part about the movie is how it ends. Which is what you'll see after watching it, and why I'm really REALLY excited about getting started on Dead Fantasy II-V. But more on that later.

Balance

I hope it's noticable. The subtle signs of me trying to become a better animator. Having a movie with humans instead of humanoids I wanted to portray less broader more precise movement. Though still with the anime stylings of movies such as Final Fantasy Advent Children. I spent a lot more focus this time around on making those sequences better in terms of movement & character weighting etc. It's nowhere by any means near professional animation quality. Just a step up I knew I should be taking. But doing so made others things fall back a tad. More obvious than the things I did better at, were where I fell short. My choices as the Director of this movie suffered in a way due to my effort as an animator. I knew this would happen, but I still don't like seeing the faults I made including camera work and pacing. It's a pretty simple formula too. I'd spend a good several hours/days getting a really good sequence done, then when it comes to the camera work, I don't want to lose any of those frames, even if it's a responsible choice to cut it out.

The imbalance of animator vs director this time around effected the overall movie, and I will know better next time.

Technical Achievements

This time around I hope it's also noticeable the visual jump I made as well. Through some clever compositing and setup, I was actually able to do these higher poly scenes with less rendertime than the usual. I won't trade away all my secrets (right away), but suffice it to say I've learned a hell of a lot. And it'll show in my future movies. These technical advancements usually come for me about every other movie, but with the amount I've gained on what I anticipate being my growth level. I probably won't have to make another jump for a good year at least. Let's hope I'll have time to do the next episodes. Because on top of all that I've just stated, I have a stable and exciting new career in the gaming industry this time around which take precedent over my sidework. Therefore I'm leaning towards the next movie I make being again under that banner of "Part Time Dreamer" where I will try to continue off ROAD 4 which has been sitting at "to be continued" almost a year now.

To Be Continued...

Speaking of that, so yea. This here "to be continued" totally intentional... uhh sorry 'bout that. That was the catcher, and you'll see soon enough (hopefully) because the next few movies in this series are going to be killer. If you're familiar with my method, I previz in my head, then go straight to application. The previz's for the movies following this one are all strong. This one on the other hand, was almost a pre-requisite to getting those movies started. In fact, a lot of the previz was me saying to myself "aaaaaand insert cool fighting sequence here." So it's also obvious why I wanted to get through this one so quickly, no credits, not drawn out opening. Just lots of action.

On top of that. Once I head into production for the next few movies there aren't going to be many technology jumps for me. Whenever I can stay away from improving my methods and technology within a movie, I'm always sure to put the directing and choreography first.

I guess overall though I'm dissapointed in myself I still manage to be proud of my work. Only because I'm familiar with the workarounds that are nescessary in getting things done.

Violence
One point I'd like to make, if you're unfamiliar with either franchise. Both the characters in Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive are pretty much superhuman. Able to take bullets and keep running. So at a glance with the actions performesd in this movie, what could be viewed as acts of violence, I'd like to state that hopefully the tone of this short if viewed as light. Under the moniker of "friendly competition." In that I tried to put smiling faces on the girls whenever it was appropriate. Honestly I don't like violence at all, what I love is choreography.

A special guy, let’s call him Mr. Y
This movie and many of my others, wouldn’t be possible without the under appreciated genius that is game modding. In this case finding the final fantasy models were made available by a guy out there who I get the feeling would rather remain anonymous. Let’s call him mister Y. Though I found these models and tools on a modding forum, it was Mr. Y that made it possible. And because it’s my nature to want to credit the source, I sought him out and got a very good impression that Mr. Y is VERY cautious about legalities and issues regarding model hacking. I tried several times to sum up the courage to tell him of my project, but also in my nature is being strongly influenced by words. If he had object I would have probably not been able to finish this.

So Mr. Y if you’re reading this, I’d love to credit you, if that’s not of your taste, then know that your work is greatly appreciated.

Ultimately I'm hoping people won't keep making those inevitable comparisons to Haloid. For one I know there'll be yet more qualms about using the Matrix music. But I can say that 100% of this movie was done without referencing a single clip of the Matrix. I was making movies before Haloid and I have dozens of movies that I'll be making in the future. I'm a bit uncertain as to what task I should undertake next. I should just as well take some time to manage my health/finances. But I can gaurauntee whatever movie comes next I'm fully equipped and ready for sheer awesomeness.

Stay Tuned.
